Product information "Kreidezeit linseed oil varnish, solvent-free"
Kreidezeit Linseed Oil Varnish is a solvent-free surface protection that can be used indoors for wood surfaces subject to low levels of stress such as furniture, doors, beams, panelling and much more. The product can also be used as a primer for Kreidezeit stand oil paints and wood stains.
The central element is linseed oil, which is obtained from the flax or linseed plant by cold pressing the seeds under high pressure. The oil yield can be up to 90%. Although linseed oil dries under the effect of oxygen, it takes several weeks to dry properly, which is why drying agents are added to the linseed oil to reduce this time to 24-48 hours.
Area of application
Used pure as a solvent-free surface protector for interior wooden surfaces subject to low levels of stress, classic oiled surfaces: furniture, doors, beams, panelling, etc.
Suitable as a primer for subsequent coats with:
- opaque stand oil paints on all untreated woods
- pigmented wood stain on highly absorbent or weathered wood
Dilute linseed oil varnish in a ratio of 1:1 with balsamic turpentine oil (Art. 447) (=> half oil).
For the production of oil paints according to your own recipes. When working on very dense, weakly absorbent and tannin-containing types of wood, a slight dilution with natural balsamic turpentine oil is recommended. Linseed oil guarantees a long "open" working time and deep penetration into even the smallest wood pores due to the small molecule size. This enables excellent cross-linking of the substrate with subsequent coats of oil.

Substrate preparation / basic sanding
Remove resin pockets and old synthetic resin-based coatings. Sand new and weathered wood (grain size P 80 - 100), round edges. Do not sand finer as the wood would otherwise be compacted and would not be able to absorb enough oil. It is better to "open up" new, smooth, planed or finely pre-sanded wood by sanding. Remove dust thoroughly after sanding.
Application
Shake the product briefly before use.
KREIDEZEITLinseed Oil Varnish is applied once or twice with intermediate drying. Intermediate sanding may be necessary before the second application.
Mix containers of different batch numbers together before use. The product must not be poured onto surfaces!
Clean and remove dust from untreated substrates.
For good penetration, it is recommended to dilute the product with at least 20% balsamic turpentine oil for the first coat on very dense, low-absorbent and tannin-rich woods (e.g. oak).
Please note: Exterior wood should be fitted with stainless metal screws and fittings, otherwise dark discolouration may occur when overcoating with oil. Processing and drying temperature at least 10 °C for at least 48 hours.
1. first coat
Apply KREIDEZEIT Linseed Oil Varnish evenly with a brush, short-pile roller, cloth or sponge. After 10 - 20 minutes, rub the entire treated surface thoroughly with a dry, lint-free cloth until the surface has a uniform silky matt appearance.
When rubbing down, ensure that any oil that has not been absorbed is completely removed, as otherwise shiny or sticky areas may remain.
KREIDEZEIT Linseed Oil Varnish must penetrate the wood completely and must not form a layer on the wood.
2. intermediate sanding (optional)
Intermediate sanding is only necessary if the surface has dried rough after the first coat, e.g. due to raised wood fibres. Intermediate sanding with sandpaper (grain size P 100 - 120) in the direction of the fibres. Remove dust thoroughly after sanding.
3. second coat (optional)
A second coat may be necessary if used alone indoors or if a subsequent coat of stand oil paint is required on very absorbent or weathered wood. Repeat the application as for the first coat.
4. subsequent coats
For subsequent coats, observe the product information for Stand Oil Paint or Wood Stain.
5. wax treatment
Oiled surfaces generally do not require wax treatment. To increase the gloss, a final treatment with KREIDEZEIT Carnauba Wax Emulsion can be applied after 48 hours at the earliest. To do this, dilute 1 part emulsion with 2 parts water, apply evenly and thinly, allow to dry and polish as required.
Drying time
Dry and recoatable at 20 °C and 60 % relative humidity after approx. 24 hours (or 48 hours on substrates containing tannin, oak, etc.). High humidity, cold, substrates containing tannin significantly extend the drying time. Fully cured after approx. 4 weeks. During this time, use carefully and protect from water.
Suitable tools
Paint brushes / surface brushes, short-pile rollers (Magic felt, Art. 6517), lint-free cloths, solvent-resistant plastic sponges
Cleaning the tools
Immediately after use, wash with balsamic turpentine oil and then with Olive Care Soap or Corfu Soap.
Note
Due to the content of natural oils, dark yellowing occurs on surfaces with low light incidence. When natural oils dry, a typical odour occurs which disappears over time. Unremoved iron filings on the substrate can lead to discolouration when the product is applied. Not recommended for use on the inside of closed cabinets, these are better treated with Shellac Varnish, Carnauba Wax Emulsion or Corfu Soap.
Kreidezeit Linseed Oil Varnish can be tinted with Kreidezeit Earth and Mineral Pigments; to do this, first mix the pigments with a small amount of Linseed Oil Varnish and only then add to the total volume.
